The Underdogs clinched the Division 2 finals by beating last years champions the Wolves in a thrilling encounter.

SINCE commencing on Sept 12, the Malaysia Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) National Ice Hockey League 2014 has witnessed plenty of high quality, adrenalin-pumping action on ice.

The finals held last Saturday at the Sunway Pyramid Ice Rink, marked the closure of this year’s second National Ice Hockey League organised by the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation.

It was also a day waited upon with great anticipation by the teams who had given their all over three months of intense league competition.

This year’s league competition, held over the course of three months, saw five Division 1 Teams engaged in a series of 33 games while four Division 2 Teams played a total of 12 games and four Division 3 Teams played a total of 8 games.

In the Division 1 finals, local favourites the Asian Tigers out-played the Wildcats in impressive fashion to clinch the Division One Trophy with an emphatic 5-1 win.

The Tigers had triumphed over Tenaga / Taylors in the first semi-final playoff held earlier on Dec 3 to qualify for the finals against the Wildcats, who had progressed ahead of Jazura in the second semi-final playoff on the same night.

In the Division 2 finals, the Underdogs – formerly known as The Vipers – truly lived up to their new name when they managed to upset the applecart by wrestling the coveted MIHF Champion Trophy from last year’s champions Wolves in a close game that finished 10-9 to the eventual winners.

It was a fitting end to a promising campaign for the Underdogs, who also gained a measure of sweet revenge by overcoming the side that beat them in the 2012 MIHF National League Finals.

In the Division 3 finals, Lil Mayans defeated TM Titans 4-1 to lift the trophy.

There was another upset in the Division 3 finals when the Lil Mayans defeated hot favourites TM Titans to clinch the championship trophy. Both teams had played hard in the first and second Semi-Final Playoffs over their opponents Jazura Girls Ice Hockey Club and D-Jungle Magic, respectively, to qualify for the finals.

In a thrilling finale to a captivating league season, all three league champions in their respective divisions gave their absolute all to deliver hard-earned wins over familiar, yet very determined rivals, making for a true spectacle for the fans gathered at the Sunway Pyramid Ice Rink to watch the players in action in all 3 matches.
