A LONG list of activities and festivals awaits Penangites and tourists for Visit Penang Year 2015.
Penang Global Tourism general manager Ooi Chok Yan said there would be two new festivals out of the 34 planned for the entire year.
“The two new events will be the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta which will be held on Feb 21 and 22 and the Penang Anime Matsuri Summer Party which will be held on May 23 and 24,” he told a press conference in Komtar, George Town, yesterday.
Ooi added that February would be one of the most happening months of Visit Penang Year 2015, as it would kick off with the Tropfest Southeast Asia, followed by Thaipusam, Chinese New Year, the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and the Hokkien New Year.
“The Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta will be an event for everyone. We are hoping to make it into an annual affair, based on the response,” he said.
Other festivals lined up include the Malaysia International Lion Dance on Stilts Competition, the Penang Pesta Chingay Parade and St Anne’s Festival.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, also at the press conference, said that Penang had doubled in investments this year compared with those last year.
“The whole of last year, we recorded RM3.9bil in investments but this year, we have already recorded RM6bil in investments as of September,” he said.
Lim said that Penang had been “very selective” nowadays.
“We choose our investments coming in and are looking at hi-tech, high value-added, knowledge-intensive as well as information-based industries.
“We are stressing upon not just quantity but quality.
“It’s pointless to have a huge number of investments if it does not match our economic profile and economic advantages.
“For example, the textile industry may be a very big investment but when it is labour-intensive, I don’t think it suits Penang,” he said.
