PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) recently organised its popular Street Smart programme, reaching out to more than 1,000 students from 19 schools nationwide.
The corporate social responsibility programme was organised in collaboration with Petrosains as part of the company’s initiatives to educate school children on the importance of road safety.
The half-day workshops at selected schools nationwide comprised hands-on educational activities about road safety.
Among them are Seri Bintang Selatan in Cheras and SK Bandar Rinching in Semenyih (Selangor), SMK Permatang Pasir (Penang), SMK Jati in Ipoh (Perak), SK Nyaris-Nyaris, SJK(C) Bong Hwa, and SMK Agama Limauan in Bongawan (Sabah).
The activities included science-based activities, general knowledge and road safety tips. The main objective of holding these workshops at schools was to educate, share and create awareness amongst students on the importance of being safe on the road, both as pedestrians and as future drivers.
PDB managing director and chief executive officer Mohd Ibrahimnuddin Mohd Yunus hoped to transform the students into safety ambassadors and share what they have learned at the workshop with their family and friends.
“The programme was specifically designed for young students to help them understand road safety rules and instil road safety culture among children,” he said.
SK Montfort, Batu Pahat headmaster Ali Mohd Yunus said the Street Smart programme was a noble effort by Petronas to provide hands-on and outside classroom experience to pupils on road safety.
“I am hopeful this programme will help reduce the loss of life caused by accidents, especially among students,” he said.
Expressing her excitement after a helmet-making activity, Nur Nilam Sari, a 14-year-old student of SMK Tasek Utara 2, Johor Baru said, “I really enjoyed making the helmet because it allowed me to communicate with my friends to come up with creative ideas to complete the task.”
Besides the Petronas Street Smart programme, the Petronas Coffee Break Campaign, which is done twice yearly during the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities, is also part of the company’s flagship road safety programme.
