Brimming with hope

All for 1: The throngs of people standing in line outside the IRB office at Beach Street.

EARLY birds arrived in droves to hand in their 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) 2015 forms at the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) office in Beach Street, George Town.

The long queue caused traffic congestion as cars pulled over to drop or pick up passengers in Beach Street, Penang.

Eight booths were set up at the ground floor of the building to assist the people, mainly senior citizens, as a few IRB officers distributed forms for them to apply or to update their particulars.

Among those in the crowd Goh Siew Khim, 60, who showed up with her friend Chong Kooi Gek, 82.

“Since my daughter is on leave and is free to bring me, I came over to submit my documents.

“My friend, Kooi Gek tagged along since she is applying for the first time. She was not sure how to apply,” said Goh.

Retiree T. Subramaniam, 75, said he queued up for an hour before his turn arrived at 11am.

“I came to update my particulars since we are now required to name a beneficiary in our BR1M application,” he added.

An IRB spokesman said the deadline for the BR1M forms submission was Dec 31. The counters are open from 8am to 5pm daily.

Together with their forms, he said, applicants were now required to submit photocopies of their bank account book, their MyKad (for applicant, their life partner and beneficiaries), photocopies of their payslip or pensioner’s statement (for applicant, partner and dependents) and proof of relations (marriage certificate, divorce certificate or birth cert).
