NUSAJAYA: Segamat residents are encouraged to go for free screening conducted by the state health department during the JCare Carnival 2014.
Many events and activities have been lined up for visitors this weekend at Dataran Segamat.
State Health and Environment executive councillor Datuk Ayub Rahmat said the Segamat district has been chosen to hold the inaugural event and if successful, it would be held in other districts next year.
“This is an integrated outreach event to create better awareness and understanding among the public on the importance of taking care of their health,’’ he said.
Ayub added there would be talks by doctors and nutritionists covering health-related subjects and issues during the event.
He said apart from the health-related topics, there would also be talks and exhibitions on the importance of caring for the environment.
“Health and environment actually go hand-in-hand as we need to take care of our health and environment,’’ added Ayub.
He said for instance, the public should not throw rubbish in rivers they were the main source of water supply and it would be more costly to treat contaminated water.
Ayub said illegal land clearing for economic activities such as farming and plantations could also disturb the natural eco-system and cause major floods during heavy rain.
Meanwhile, Johor Health Department director Dr Mohd Khairy Yaakub said among the medical-checks up offered include high blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels as well as eye and dental examinations.
“Smokers and drinkers can also meet with doctors and counsellors during the event to get advice on how to quit their bad habits,’’ he said.
