BACK for its seventh consecutive year, the Malaysian qualifying rounds of the 2014 Volvo World Golf Challenge at the Tropicana Golf and Country Resort saw participants competing to win the Malaysian title and a chance to play among the best at the world finals in Shanghai, China in April 2015.
Organised by Volvo Trucks Malaysia, the annual tournament saw 98 golfers comprising Volvo customers, partners and members of the media battling it out on the greens for the much sought-after championship title.
“For us at Volvo, golf is not just a sport; it is a game which reflects our business because it is a game of focus and precision, and is growing in strength.
“Much like our brand, we emphasise these qualities to produce trucks that are reliable, durable and precise in addressing our customers’ need for total and efficient transportation solution.
“This year, we are very grateful to have the strong support of our partners, customers as well as media friends as their presence here confirms that our relationship goes beyond business,” said Volvo Malaysia managing director Mats Nilsson.
The half-day tournament, which saw players teeing off in the wee hours of the morning, concluded at lunch time with Jaya Tiasa Holdings Berhad Forest Operations general manager Datuk Peter Yong King King taking the top spot with a score of 39.
“I am pleased with my game today and it has been a really good outing for all who played,” said Yong.
The 53-year-old will be playing against national champions from 25 other countries for the ultimate title of the Volvo World Golf Champion 2014.
Ben Lim Choon Shyang from Vertex Mission Sdn Bhd and Fred Chen from Ah Sang Motor emerged as winners in the second and third placing respectively. Both winners took home a trophy and a game of weekday golf for four at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (2nd place) and Tropicana Golf and Country Resort (3rd place).
Since its inauguration in 1988, the tournament has gathered more than one million golfers around the world in this competitive and highly-esteemed event among aspiring golfers.
Winners of the national qualifying level will make their way to the Volvo World Golf Challenge world finals, held in conjunction with Volvo’s major professional tournament — Volvo China Open.
The annual Volvo China Open is aimed at further communicating the premium quality of the marque as well as to reach out to its key customers through this premier sport.
