Talk on origins of Xin Onn Hakkas

KUCHING: The Friends of Sarawak Museum (FoSM) will hold a public talk titled “The History of the Xin Onn Hakka of Kuching” this Saturday.

The talk will be given by Bau-born journalist and writer KC Jong.

He will speak on the origins of the Xin Onn Hakkas, how they came to Kuching, the early arrivals including Fong Fah Lan and the Stampin land development, the group migration of the Xin Onn people as well as their schools and associations.

Jong worked for 20 years as a journalist in Chinese and English newspapers in Sarawak and Brunei.

He joined the Sarawak Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry as executive secretary in 1984 and left in 1999. He has written more than 10 books in Chinese and English, including four books on the Hakkas in Sarawak.

The talk, which starts at 10.30am, will be held at the Sarawak Taiwan Graduates Association Kuching branch office at 33 Jalan Abang Abdul Rahim behind Hock Lee Centre.
