Manufactured pop acts, TV talent shows like American Idol and teenagers belting out songs from their bedrooms in online videos have meant that people’s first — and often only — point of contact with new music is through recordings.

Thanks to the power of social media, unknowns can be propelled to stardom overnight, and often disappear into the firmament just as quickly.
