THE Lum Yeong Tong Yap Temple in Armenian Street, Penang, kicked off its 90th anniversary celebration with a grand ancestral worship ceremony.
More than 100 clansmen from Thailand, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Taiwan and all across Malaysia attended the worship ceremony.
Temple secretary Yap Lip Suan said some 300 clansmen had converged in Penang to attend the two-day celebration.
“We have organised a heritage walk for the delegates from other places, just to expose them to the beauty of our city.
“The delegates will also be going on a trip to the mainland today where they will cross the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, the longest bridge in South-East Asia,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
He said other programmes included a national karaoke competition and a grand dinner at the Shang Wu primary school hall today.
Lip Suan said the temple was established in 1924 and the committee holds a grand anniversary celebration every five years.
Also present at the ancestral worship ceremony were temple advisor Yeap Chor Beng, chairman Datuk Yeap Beow Chong, vice-chairman Yap Teik Aik, assistant secretary Yeap Kok Lim, youth section vice-chairman Yeap Han Hooi and anniversary organising committee chairman Datuk Yap Ching Chau.
