KUANTAN: A businessman from Kuala Lumpur became the proud owner of a special number plate - SAS 1545 - on the first day of bidding for the special series launched in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Sultan Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah on the throne.
The number plate starting with SAS - an acronym for Sultan Ahmad Shah - was originally reserved for vehicles registered in Sabah.
TAT Alliance Services Sdn Bhd vice-chairman Datuk Seri Johny Ch’ng Ewe Gee said due to a special request in conjunction with Sultan Ahmad Shah’s 40th anniversary this year, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had agreed to release the special series to the company.
Ch’ng said a businessman, in his 30s, found out and drove down to Kuantan early in the morning in his BMW X6 to become the first person to purchase the special plate number.
“We are delighted with the overwhelming response as since bidding was opened, more than 1,000 number plates - from SAS 1 to SAS 9999 - have been sold within five hours.
“However, SAS 1 to SAS 1000 is reserved only for state VVIPs, including Datuks and members of the royalty, while SAS 1001 to SAS 9999 is for members of the public.
“Of course, SAS 1 is reserved and owned by Sultan Ahmad Shah himself,” he said when met while accompanying the owners for registration at the JPJ Kuantan here.
Ch’ng, said his company had the exclusive right to sell the number plate to the people who were interested.
He said an authorisation letter would be issued to the buyer who must bring it to the Kuantan JPJ for registration.
“Once it has been registered, the owner can affixed the new number plate on his or her new or existing car.
”However, we urged them to follow all traffic rules and regulations to safeguard the good name of the state ruler,” he said.
He added that part of the proceeds from the sales of the special number plates would go to the building fund for the construction of the proposed Wisma MCPF Pahang.
