PEKAN: Despite failing to get into the Guiness Book of Records for making the biggest number of lemang, State Felda Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Abu Bakar Harun was happy enough to see the gotong-royong spirit among the settlers and villagers in his Chini constituency during the bakar lemang making competition.
He said the record stood at 5,000 sticks of lemang, cooked in bamboo.
Twenty-one teams comprising of 30 participants took part to bakar (cook) a total of 3,600 lemang which fell short of the current record.
It was the seventh year the competition was held in conjunction with the Hari Raya Open House.
Abu Bakar said the competition with good prizes, was held was not merely for them to compete, but an incentive for them to make the lemang.
He said everything that was needed to make the lemang were provided by the Felda management and the participants only needed to prepare the bamboo and show team spirit.
Some 5,000 settlers and villagers attended to witness the ceremony of bakar lemang held in Chini centre town, Felda Chini Timur.
Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s eldest son, Tengku Hasanal Ibrahim Alam Syah was also present to witness the making of lemang and to have his first “taste” of the finished product.
Abu Bakar said the competition which drew thousands of the both settlers and villagers in his constituency was a prove of good relationship and unity in the area.
