Universiti Malaya (UM) alumni of 1981/1982 traded cherished memories and cheeky tales of youth during their reunion dinner recently.
Former faculty mates, some of whom flew from Sarawak, Singapore and even Australia, greeted one another warmly and searched the crowd for familiar faces.
UM 1981/1982 Alumni 2014 Reunion Dinner organising committee chairman H’ng Siew Tuan said the reunion was first held in 2012 with just three tables of alumni from varying faculties.
However, the gathering this year saw 10 tables comprising alumni from the Geography, Arts and Social Sciences, English, Economics and Accounting as well as Diploma of Education faculties.
Themed “Sharing and Rejoicing Life’s Touching Moments”, the guest of honour was former UM Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean and current Nilai University chancellor Professor Emeritus Tengku Datuk Shamsul Bahrin.
“I think we shall forever remain loyal and protective of UM and the memories we made there,” said Shamsul.
Entrepreneur Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, who was from the Economics and Accounting Faculty of 1981, said he believed that the knowledge and experience he accumulated while in UM helped him to develop the principles that drove him to succeed.
“I left home for the first time in my life to study in UM. I think the best thing about my life in university was the friends and people I met there who have helped me in my career.
“UM also taught me about life’s challenges and the risks involved as we chased our dreams,” said Liew, who is Eco World Development Bhd director.
Former UM lecturers, Professor Dr Lee Boon Thong, Datin Zaharah Mahmud and UM Alumni Association (PAUM) president Datuk Noordin Abdul Razak were also at the reunion dinner that took place at the Pullman Studio in Pullman Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
Members of the organising committee included Star (M) Publications content development chief operating officer June H.L. Wong, Tenaga Nasional Bhd Chairman’s Office general manager Datuk Chong Huck Joo and tax consultant Bulvir Singh.
