THE Body Shop Malaysia went the whole nine yards for its 30th anniversary celebration themed ‘Together in Electric Dreams’.

There was ‘80s music to greet guests as they arrived at the shindig while employees were dressed in the signature style of that decade — fingerless lace gloves and multiple chains of necklaces over a bustier a la Madonna, big shoulder pads just like that worn by Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, complete with the perm that was all the rage back then.

Inside the ballroom, the tables were identified by names of stars — international and Malaysian — instead of the usual numbers.

Even the entertainment on stage kept strictly to the theme.

A group of employees, led by managing director Datin Mina Cheah-Foong and executive director Datuk Simon Foong, got all dolled up as famous artistes and bands from the era and lip-synched to their songs.

It was the perfect, energetic kick-off to the party, paving the way for guest performer Ribena Berry, a character created by theatre icon Jo Kukathas.

Food and drinks flowed while awards were presented to the most deserving and outstanding members of the company. Then, the company’s history and special moments were relived in a video presentation.

Just as the 500 employees and 150 guests, comprising the media and friends of the brand, were preparing to bid adieu for the night, event emcees Loshini John and Daryl Foong announced a surprise guest star.

It didn’t take much for most of the people in the ballroom to correctly guess it was the inimitable Sheila Majid.

She took the stage to great energy from the very responsive crowd, as she belted out four of her best-loved classics including Lagenda and Antara Anyer dan Jakarta. — By VICKY OOI
