MOSQUES in Kedah have been given a total of RM563,000 to carry out activities during the fasting month.

The 563 mosques in the 12 districts each received RM1,000 from the Implementation and Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department.

Kedah Regency Council chairman Tunku Temenggong Kedah Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, who presented the aid at Wisma Darul Aman on Tuesday, urged all Muslims to earn as much rahmat (good deeds) as possible during the Ramadan month.

Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir in his speech hoped that the mosques would be an institution to unite the Muslims.

“This heart of the society (mosques), should be cared with full integrity and responsibility.

“Stay away from smearing the mosques by misusing the mimbar (the raised platform in the mosque where the imam stands to deliver sermons) for any political interests,” he said.

The newly crowned hafazan (memorisation) category winner of the 56th International Al-Quran Recital Assembly, Mohd Ersyad Abdullah, 19, from Baling, Kedah received a special award from Tunku Sallehuddin.

Also present during the event were Toh Puan Temenggong Kedah Puan Sri Datuk Seri Tengku Maliha Tengku Ariff and Mukhriz’s wife Toh Puan Norzieta Zakaria.
