KUANTAN FA, with two matches remaining, have become the FAM Cup champions.
Kuantan FA, following their 1-1 draw with MOF KL, at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan, have collected 45 points.
Close rivals Kuantan Port and Kuala Lumpur, with 38 and 37 points respectively, are not in a position to overtake Kuantan FA. As the champions, Kuantan FA have also gained promotion to the Premier League.
Both Kuantan Port and Kuala Lumpur are in the race for the remaining one spot for promotion. Kuantan Port’s matches are against MOF KL and Malaysian Indian Sports Council -Malaysian Indian Football Association (MISC-MIFA) while Kuala Lumpur’s encounters are against Sungai Ara FC and YBU FC.
Kuantan FA assistant coach Shukri Ismail said they were delighted with the victory.
“It is indeed encouraging as we have won the FAM Cup with two matches remaining. But our celebrations will have to wait as we would like to win our remaining two matches as well,’’ said Shukri.
Kuantan FA will meet Cebagoo FC at the Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan tomorrow and complete their fixtures with an away match against Harimau Muda C at the Maybank Sports Complex in Bangi on June 25.
Shukri said the players have been advised to give their best in their remaining matches.
“We want the players to continue their winning streak in the competition. The management will continue to monitor the players’ commitment as we have to look ahead to the new season in the competitive Premier League.
“Of course, we will have to strengthen the side with new talented players to put up a strong challenge in the Premier League. We will make a decision on this matter after the season,’’ added Shukri.
Kuala Lumpur coach Tang Siew Seng said they have to win the matches against Sungai Ara FC and YBU FC.
“It is not an encouraging situation as our position will also depend on Kuantan Port’s matches. We look to our players to rise to the occasion and collect maximum points and hope for Kuantan Port to falter,’’ said Siew Seng.
Meanwhile, MISC-MIFA slumped to their 11th defeat in the competition when they went down 3-1 to Hulu Terengganu DFA at the UPM Sports Complex in Serdang.
After a scoreless first half, Hulu Terengganu DFA scored their goals through Kamal Baharin Abdullah (60th), Mohd Hazrulzizam Mustafa (64th) and Mohamad Lizman Solehin (74th) minutes while P. Saran scored MISC-MIFA’s goal in the 81st minute. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for ambitious MISC-MIFA, who were looking forward to a mid-table finish in the 12-team league.
They are last with 17 points from four wins, five draws and 11 defeats. It will be an uphill task for MISC-MIFA, coached by former international K. Sanbagamaran, to improve their standings in the table.
