KUCHING: Police have seized illegal logs worth nearly half a million ringgit as well as a vessel and trailer from a sawmill in Bintawa here.
General Operations Force (GOF) intelligence officer Pabilah Abdullah said the timber, estimated to be worth RM420,000, was seized in an early morning raid conducted jointly with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
“We found 1,121 logs of various kinds on which royalty had not been paid. Of the total, 121 logs were seized from a trailer and the rest from a vessel.
“The trailer driver, sawmill manager and vessel captain have been detained for further investigation,” he said after the raid yesterday.
Pabilah added that the vessel worth some RM800,000 and the trailer worth RM80,000 were also seized.
He said the case would be handed to the state Forest Department for further action, likely to be under Section 85(1) of the Sarawak Forest Ordinance for failure to pay the royalty.
According to an SFC official who requested anonymity, logs for which the royalty has been paid will have a property hammer-mark and removal pass.
“If there are no property marks, the royalty on the logs have not been paid,” he said.
