CEMPAKA Damansara Interact Club of Cempaka Schools is organising a charity walkathon and workshop on IT to benefit underprivileged children.
The 4.5km walkathon, themed “iTeachiLearniGrow”, is expected to raise at least RM12,000, to provide Shelter for Children with IT equipment.
It will be held on June 15, starting from Bangunan Bakti Siti Hasmah to Taman Lembah Kiara.
Cempaka Damansara Interact Club adviser Siti Norazlina Mohamed said the charity walkathon event was a good way for students to gain experience in helping underprivileged children.
It is open to the Cempaka community, including teachers, students, parents, staff as well as the alumni.
On the workshop, Cempaka Damansara Interact Club president Amanda Lee said the club members had surveyed several orphanages.
She said that while Shelter for Children was equipped to cover the basic needs of the children there, it lacked the equipment to help them learn the basics of IT.
“Up to 15 children, aged between 10 and 15, will take part in the workshop.
“They will be taught the basics such as learning to use iMovie, Keynote, ebook and email.
“The sessions will be carried out during a workshop and a series of classes will be held throughout the rest of this year, and hopefully next year.
“It will be taught by the Interact Club members, comprising Cempaka Schools students,” said Lee.
Meanwhile, Sri Cempaka, Damansara Heights senior principal Farah Salizah Ahmad Sarji said the school was always looking forward to helping the needy.
“I think it is a commendable effort by the students because it promotes two things. Firstly, they organise a charity event for a good purpose. And secondly, it promotes healthy living and the funds raised will be used for a noble deed.
“This is a great initiative from the committee members, teachers as well as the adviser,” said Farah Salizah.
Tickets for the walkathon are available at RM14 per person. For details, visit www.cempaka.edu.my
