WANITA Gerakan should fully support the enactment of the Gender Equality Act which would give women in the country equal rights and equality based on merits, said Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow.
Teng, who was the guest of honour at the International Women’s Day Dinner organised by state Wanita Gerakan, said the power of women was immense and should be harnessed to create awareness on gender equality.
State Wanita Gerakan chairman Rowena Yam in her speech said one of the major concerns for women was in the area of education.
“Good quality education is a stepping stone to greater progress in life while equality in education will give equal opportunities for our children based on meritocracies regardless of status, race and gender,” she added.
She said education should not be politicised and it was normal for women to fight for their rights and those of their children.
“Wanita Gerakan has always played an important role by continuously keeping in touch with the grassroots and serving the community,” said Yam.
The recent dinner themed ‘Western Cowboy’ was attended by about 400 people.
