ABOUT a week ago, I was running on the treadmill with a view of an Olympic-length pool in front of me, set against a landscaped expanse of open space.

A running trail goes around a clear water lake and the small hill in the distance makes for a relaxing view, a welcome relief from the skyscrapers. I could almost hear the birds chirping outside, were it not for the air-conditioned glass wall that separated me from my surroundings.
