THIRTY guest relations officers (GRO) were detained by police in a raid at an entertainment outlet in Farquhar Street, Penang.

Some of the GROs, believed to be from Vietnam and China, were caught attending to customers in the premises during the operation codenamed Ops Noda Khas.

Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi said police also arrested a man who is believed to be the caretaker during the 7.30pm raid on Tuesday.

“All the GROs together with two workers and five customers were taken to the police station for further investigation,” he said in a statement.

He said the case would be investigated under Section 55b of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 39b of the same Act.

Meanwhile, police also confiscated 60 gambling machines believed to be worth RM180,000 from seven premises in Machang Bubuk yesterday.

SDCP Rahim said that during the four-hour operation from 2pm, police detained five caretakers and six men, aged between 22 and 55, who were suspected to be gambling.

He said this case would be investigated under Section 48(a) of the Open Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6(2) of the Entertainment Enactment 1998.

“For the first two months of this year, we also carried out 82 raids on illegal gambling dens where we confiscated 159 gambling machines and made 15 arrests,” he said.
