Protect seagrass bed, urges marine biologist

A MARINE biologist has supported the call to turn the 50.6ha seagrass bed in the Middle Bank, located between Penang Bridge and the Sungai Pinang river mouth, into a protected marine park.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu School of Marine Science and Environment dean Prof Dr Zulfigar Yasin stressed that the seagrass bed, also known as Pulau Gazumbo among researchers and in scientific journals, was an important breeding and foraging ground for marine organisms.
