FOR the first time since the inception of the Penang International Halal Expo and Conference (Pihec) in 2010, Halal Penang in collaboration with the Chefs Association Malaysia Penang Chapter will be organising the ‘Battle of the Halal Chefs’ in the coming 5th Pihec 2014.

State Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said Pihec 2014 is scheduled to be held from Friday to Sunday at the Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre (sPICE) in Relau.

A Halal Conference will be held at Eastin Hotel Penang on Saturday.

“The ‘Battle of the Halal Chefs’, from Friday to Sunday, is an exciting, innovative feature that should not be missed.

“The culinary competition will be divided into six categories, testing the gastronomic and artistic skills in food preparation, and presentation by the region’s renowned chefs.

“The competition is managed by the Chefs Association Malaysia Penang Chapter and is expected to draw more than 100 participants,” he told a press conference in Komtar, Penang, recently.

Abdul Malik said the competition is open to Muslim and non-Muslim chefs utilising local halal ingredients and products for their cuisine, sponsored by Adabi Consumer Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

“The competition will see fabulous prizes up for grabs, including the ‘Most Outstanding Halal Chef Award’ and ‘Most Outstanding Halal Malay Cuisine Team Award’.

“Besides the competition, the exposition will also feature famous TV Al-Hijrah personality — guest chef Chef Ammar demonstrating authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine.

“Other programmes include product showcases, lucky draws and appearances of ‘BoBoiBoy’ (Malaysia’s popular children animated television series), musician Najwa Latif, singer and composer Hafiz Hamidun as well as Ustaz Zamri and Dr Zaharuddin,” he said.

He added that this year’s Halal Conference is aimed at generating ideas and solutions towards the advancement of halal ingredients.

“To date, more than 200 booths of local and international companies and organisations have confirmed their participation in the exposition.

“The second edition of ‘Experience Penang - Muslim Travel Guide’, a guidebook featuring shopping spots, places of attraction, festivities, food outlets and accommodation in the state will also be launched during the expo,” he said.
