SIBU: The Christmas tree entered by Jaya Tiasa Holdings has been picked as the winner of the decorating contest here.
Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King presented the prizes to the winners on New Year’s Eve.
Jaya Tiasa’s entry resembled a musical tree, which churned out Christmas songs non-stop, especially during the night together with its flashing neon lights.
As of yesterday, the uniqueness of the tree, which is the only one that goes round and round, continued to attract visitors.
The company won RM2,000 and a certificate.
Second was Public Bank, which collected RM1,500 while third was Mafrica Corporation Sdn Bhd, pocketing RM1,000.
Fourth prize went to ZooBee Brothers Bonsai Centre, which won RM750 while fifth was Delta Mall, picking up RM500.
The other 15 companies received RM300 as consolation.
Meanwhile, Tiong urged the people to “make new year resolutions towards social responsibility. If you have the habit of illegal parking, stop it in 2014”.
“If you have the habit of occupying five footways or public spaces illegally, stop it in 2014. If you have been a good citizen, be a good and civic conscious citizen in 2014,” he said.
Tiong said for the town to progress, it was important that the people pulled their resources together.
The countdown on New Year’s Eve was four hours of solid entertainment by local artists.
The highlight was the firework display at the town square.
