MORE than 350 people had a chance to do good while enjoying Christmas carols when they attended a charity Christmas concert at Luther Centre in Petaling Jaya recently.

The concert themed “The Promise” was organised by the Anglican Diocesan Children’s Ministry and the International Community Centre (Anglican).

Organiser Deaconess Ruth Ong said the event was to raise funds to upgrade a small church in Kampung Pos Raya, Gopeng, Perak.

“Last year, my church members (from International Community Centre) visited the place.

“I wanted them to understand that it was not about us and our church. I wanted to let them see what others were experiencing and how they could help,” she said before the concert.

Husband and wife team: Rev Eddie and Ong have been organising the concert for the last seven years.

Ong said Christmas was about sharing hope and giving to others.

She said the funds would be used to build a road leading to the church, to tile up the church and buy some furniture.

“We are expecting to collect RM10,000, which is sufficient. The members of the church in Kampung Pos Raya will do the tiling and other labour work on their own.

“I want them to know it’s not just about receiving but also helping them to help themselves,” she said.

Ong’s husband and event co-organiser Rev Eddie said the Christ-mas concert was in its seventh year.

“One of the reasons we organise such a concert is to give children the opportunity to sing at big venues.

Some of these children, such as the orang asli kids, do not have the chance to sing their hearts out like this,” he said.

A 50-member choir comprising orang asli children from Gopeng and urban children from Anglican churches in the Klang Valley performed Christmas carols at the concert.

This young and dynamic community orchestra and choir, together with the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Orchestra and Choir (SKOC) — a non-profit organisation – started the night with Children’s Christmas March, Christmas Twins and Jingle Bells Rock.

After several speeches, the audience were entertained by Christmas carols by The Angelic Proclamation who sang holiday favourites such as Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Angel We Have Heard on High and O Come, Let Us Adore Him.

The crowd was enthralled when the children’s choir belted out O Little Town of Bethlehem, God Is with Us! Alleluia and Emmanuel, Emmanuel.

Present at the event was Bishop of the Diocese of Peninsular Malaysia Rev Datuk Ng Moon Hing.
