Sharing the joy of reading

THE gift of a good book is perfect for Christmas and Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd is out to spread cheer by distributing books to needy children in Penang.

“Instead of giving out titbits to the children, we prefer presenting books to build up the children’s reading habit,” said northern region area manager Teh Ai Ling.

Popular had sourced the books through its Read-Love-Share Charity Bookcase and BookXmas tree initiative.

It collected more than 3,300 second-hand children’s books.

This is the second year Popular has organised the book donation campaign and it plans to continue doing so.

Teh said the books received were suitable for children aged three to 18.

“Collection points were set up at selected Popular outlets and at the Popular Mega Bookfair.

“Popular gave out RM 10 promotional voucher to each book donor who donated a minimum of 10 books.

“More than 2,900 English titles books were collected this time and the remaining were Bahasa Malaysia books,” she said during the book giving ceremony at Straits Quay Convention Centre in Tanjung To-kong on Sunday.

She said the books would be distributed equally to seven charitable organisations in Penan.

They are Handicapped Children’s Centre Penang, Persatuan Kebaji- kan Anak-anak Yatim Islam Pulau Pinang (Perempuan), Rumah Kanak-kanak Taman Bakti, Ramakrishna Ashrama, St Joseph’s Home, St Nicholas Home Penang and Charity Drive: Enchantment of Dreams by Straits Quay.
