Book lovers in for a mega treat

THE Popular Mega Bookfair has returned to the Straits Quay Convention Centre (SQCC) in Penang, featuring over 1.5 million books of all categories.

In addition, there are stationery and multimedia products on sale and visitors can enjoy contests, charity events and author appearances lined up throughout the 10-day event ending Dec 8.

At the opening yesterday, Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd business development general manager Siew Sheue Liang said visitors could immerse themselves in exciting activities whilst embracing the joy of reading.

“Reading has many benefits. It opens your mind and helps you discover new things about yourself and the world around you.

“We believe that a nation of readers is a nation of champions, and we hope to continue cultivating a healthy reading culture among Malaysians,” he said.

Siew said the highlights of the fair included the Daily Specials featuring over 200 products tagged at low prices starting from RM3.80.

Customers making purchases over RM100 in a single receipt will receive RM25 worth of vouchers, while the first 200 daily to spend RM200 in a single receipt will receive additional F&B vouchers for Straits Quay outlets.

A wide range of books are available in the English Promos section, with selected fiction titles going from only RM8.

There are also children’s books priced from RM3 to RM5 each.

Over 500 adult and professional titles are available in the RM8 to RM20 price range, while rebates of 20% apply on a selection of Penang-themed books under the ‘We Love Penang’ promotion.

Some newly released fiction, self help, business and Malay titles are also offered with a ‘Buy 2 and above, Rebate 25%’ promo.

The fair has lined up more than 60 events. Highlights include appearances by local authors of various genres, including feng shui master Lee Cheng Ho, Learn to Speak Hokkien author Tan Choon Hoe and Dare to Dream author Datuk Danny Ooi.

Food lovers will be treated to Cook-Out Day today, featuring renowned local chefs whipping up creations in a sizzling culinary marathon.

Kitchen luminaries like Nyonya celebrity chef Ricky Ng, bestselling cookbook author Chef Hanieliza, vegetarian cooking master Madam Yap and more will whet your appetite all day long.

Youngsters with creative flair may sign up for the Snap and Sketch Competition on Dec 6, Reading Wonders Children Colouring Competition on Dec 4 and 5, and Chinese Storytelling Competition on Dec 2 and 5. Prizes totalling over RM10,000 are up for grabs.

In celebration of Christmas, Popular has also erected a 3m-tall BookXmas Tree at Straits Quay’s main lobby. Patrons can win prizes by guessing the number of books used in the Count and Win contest.

Visitors are also invited to donate used children’s books in good condition to the Read-Love-Share Charity Bookcase initiative, at the counter located outside the exhibition area on Level 6.

Those donating a minimum of 10 books will be rewarded with a RM10 voucher. Collected books will be donated to selected orphanages.

Customers who apply or renew their three-year Popular Privilege Card by Sunday will receive RM30 in vouchers, an exclusive umbrella and a Seashore Cookbook each.
