Programme aimed at producing healthy varsity students

KUCHING: The prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and other non-communicable diseases among young people has prompted the Health Ministry to introduce a Healthy Undergraduates Programme (Prosis) in institutions of higher learning to promote healthy living.

State Health deputy director Dr Jamilah Hashim said the 2011 National Health and Morbidity Study showed that among Malaysians aged 18 years and above, 2.6 million or 15.2% had diabetes, 5.8 million (32.7%) had hypertension and 6.2 million (35.1%) had high cholesterol levels.
