KUCHING: As top seed Shao-Chi Yang of Chinese Taipei cruised to the quarterfinal of the boys single event at the 22nd Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup (II) ITF Junior Tennis Championship (Grade 3) here, there were five upset results on the third day of the competition yesterday.
As expected Shao-Chi cruised to the quarterfinal after defeating Jiaqi Duan of China 6-1, 6-3 in the third round yesterday.
Fifth seed Max Purcell of Australia also booked his quarterfinal slot after he defeated eleventh seed of Hong Kong’s Siu Chuen Lam 6-2, 6-7(7), 7-6 (0).
Another Australian, Brian Tran, who is seeded 16th in the tournament, created an upset when he defeated fourth seed Eero Vasa of Finland 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Another upset was when eighth seed Chinese Taipei Wi-De Lin lost to 12th seed Tim Van Rijthoven of Netherland 6-4, 6-2.
Ireland’s Bjorn Thomson seeded nineth defeated seventh seed Benjamin Hannestad of Denmark 6-2 6-4.
The biggest upset of the day was when unseeded Sweden player Filip Mansson defeated second seed Daniel Nolan of Australia 7-6(8), 6-2 to move to the quarterfinal.
Sixth seed Chen Hsun Lo of Chinese Taipei beat 10th seed of Finland’s Patrik Niklas-Salminen 6-4, 6-3 while third seed Artus Lazdins of Latvia defeated 13th seed Francois Kellerman of Republic of South Africa 6-7(4), 7-6(5) 6-0s.
In the girls singles, nineth seed Arina Folts of Uzbekistan qualified for the semifinal after she defeated Kwan Yau Ng of Hong Kong 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal yesterday.
Another semifinalist is sixth seed Tatachar Venugopal of India who defeated 10th seed Yi-Chi Ma of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 6-0.
Second seed in the tournament Vijia Shao of China also cruised to the semifinal after defeating Nur Haliza Deria of Indonesia 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal yesterday.
Top seed of South Korean Dabin Kim will battle unseeded Julie Noe of Denmark in the quarterfinal today.
Julie created an upset after she defeated India 11th seed Vasanti Shinde 6-0, 7-6(4) in the third round yesterday while Dabin beat Chaoyi Chen of China 6-3, 6-3.
