KUANTAN: There must be a focus on stroke awareness as prevention is better than cure, said Kuantan National Stroke Association of Malaysia (Nasam) chairman Datuk Ng Koong Sinn.
He said instead of focusing on stroke survivors only, the association need to educate the public on healthy living, exercise and having a balanced diet as prevention measures.
“Basically, we are taking a three-prong approach which are ‘reduce and prevent’, ‘early rehabilitation and reducing dependency’ and ‘life after stroke’.
“We hold regular talks as a step to increase awareness on the illness. If one is afflicted by stroke, there is a good chance of recovery to a normal life if they seek early treatment,” he said at the fourth Kuantan Nasam fund raising dinner here recently.
He added that the Kuantan Nasam centre also acted as a support group for stroke patients where they could meet up regularly to exchange ideas among themselves and learn from each other.
“Patients have to learn how to approach life after stroke or they will be prone to shutting out all contact,” he said.
Ng also said the association would be organising a “Nasam Hope Walk” to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The event would be held at Taman Gelora on Oct 20.
Those interested could contact Kuantan Nasam at 09-5668159 for registration.
On another matter, Ng said up to RM70,000 had been successfully raised to cover the centre’s annual expenses.
He said the centre was expanding to accommodate more patients comfortably.
