A UNIVERSITI Sains Malaysia (USM) alumnus and former director has been named the new pro-chancellor of the varsity during its 48th convocation ceremony.
Tan Sri Mustafa Mansor was first appointed a member of the USM Council in 1978 and subsequently became a member of the USM Board of Directors and Board of Governors.
He has chaired many of the university’s committees including the selection and promotion, internal audit and Usains Holding Sdn Bhd.
He was a teacher in Segamat, Johor, before furthering his studies in USM which led him to become a human resource officer and later on a managing director.
Mustafa received his early education at the Clifford School, Kuala Kangsar, and St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh, and later at the Kuala Lumpur Language Institute where he obtained his Malaysian Teacher Training Certificate.
He then attained his bachelors degree in Social Science majoring in Political Science in USM.
USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Omar Osman said the appointment of Mustafa would be beneficial to the university given his wide knowledge and experience.
Meanwhile, Texchem Malaysia Sdn Bhd founder Tan Sri Fumihiko Konishi was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the university in recognition of his contributions to the nation and USM.
A total of 536 graduates also received their PhD and science degrees at the convocation.
