KUCHING: PDRM have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in football by winning the Piala Datuk Bandar MBKS (Kuching South City Council) veteran football tournament here.
Based on the league system, the Police side who were led by manager ASP Kamis Sulong and coach Abang Raili Saadili, emerged the top finishers, earning them the coveted trophy and a cash prize of RM2,500.
In the final match last Sunday, they edged second placers Kuching Land and Survey Department 3-1. The runners-up took home RM1,500.
At third and fourth place were State Education Department and hosts MBKS respectively, each bagging RM500.
MBKS Mayor Datuk James Chan and his deputy Abang Affandi Abang Anuar presented the prizes to the winners during the closing ceremony the Jubilee Field near Jalan Padungan here.
The eight-day outing, which kicked off on Aug 18, was organised as sidelines to this year’s Kuching Festival.
The closed inter-department competition was aimed at not only promoting healthy lifestyle and helping to boost football in the city, but also enchancing the ties and friendship between participants, including the organisers.
“It also helps to improve the standard of match officials,” said organising chairman and MBKS councillor Irwan Zulkarnain Hasbie.
ASP Kamis, who is also the football/futsal convener for the state Royal Malaysian Police contingent headquarters, said he was happy with the performance and commitment of his charges.
