KUCHING: Sarawak are confident of collecting at least 40 gold medals at the 5th Borneo Games in Labuan.
The Games, from Sept 13 to 21, offer 113 gold medals from 13 types of sports.
“Based on our discussion during the team managers and coaches meeting today, our lowest expectation in the Games is 40 gold medals,” said chef de mission Affandi Keli yesterday.
The sports Sarawak will be taking part in are lawn bowls (men and women), track and field, karate (men and women), archery (men and women), tug-of-war (men), gasing (men), swimming (men and women), sepak takraw (women only), silat (men and women), football (men only), futsal (women only) and a golf tournament for VVIP.
Affandi said the state would be sending 159 athletes and 22 officials.
“Sarawak’s main contenders will be Sabah.”
There will be four contingents from Kalimantan – East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and South Kalimantan. The other contingents are Brunei, Perlis and Labuan.
Affandi said Sarawak’s best bets would be athletics, archery, karate and swimming.
The Games are participated by athletes below 21 years old except for tug-of-war, gasing and VVIP golf.
Meanwhile, six-time state champions Kabong will represent the state in tug-of-war while the women’s team from DBKU will see action in futsal.
The previous Games were held in Samarinda, East Kalimantan in 2011. The hosts took the overall title.
