CCTVs to be installed in towns to tackle crime

KOTA KINABALU: A pilot project involving the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) in various towns will begin soon at Penampang near here and Beaufort.

The CCTVs will be installed in priority areas such as near banks.

State Local Government and Housing Ministry Datuk Hajiji Noor said this was being done in view of the increase in the number of serious crimes involving firearms.

The ministry would work closely with the police to avoid duplication and to make the most effective use of the equipment, he added.

Hajiji said local authorities had been directed to submit their proposals for the location of CCTVs.

“However, we realise that the financial allocation may not be enough and we thus have to implement the installation of CCTV cameras in stages,” he said.

“So far, whatever allocation we have is from the Federal Government through the National Key Results Area (NKRA) initiatives for the prevention and reduction of crime,” Hajiji added.
