Aid delivered to fire victims

SERIAN: The Welfare Department brought cheers to the 42 residents made homeless after their six-door longhouse at Kampung Soh near Serian was razed last Sunday.

Immediately after the fire, the department promptly delivered food supplies to the six families.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said more aid would be delivered to the affected residents today and these would include kitchen ware, clothes, school items and uniforms and materials to rebuild the longhouse.

She said the aid including the food items delivered on Sunday totalled RM21,720.

Rohani said her ministry’s National Welfare Foundation (Yayasan Kebajikan Negara) would contribute an additional RM20,000 to the relief fund.

Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang also contributed RM2,000 to each of the affected families.

“We hope the contribution can help ease the burden of the six families who suffered total loss to their homes and belongings. We are thankful there were no casualties,” she told reporters during a site visit to the village yesterday.

Also present during the site visit was Sadong Jaya assemblyman Datuk Seri Ali Mahmud.

The incident happened at 9am on Sunday when most of the longhouse residents were not at home.

The Fire Department (Bomba) received a distressed call around 9.14am.

A fire engine from Siburan Bomba was despatched to the scene and arrived there at 9.35am. Serian Bomba fire engine came to assist later.

The fire spread fast, leaving no time for residents to save their belongings. They were pratically left with only the clothes on their backs.

Senior Fire Officer II (PBK II) Mat Undek said the fire was completely doused at 9.55am.

Several villagers said they heard explosions when the fire began in the first bilik of the longhouse, but Mat said yesterday the cause was still under investigation.
