SIBU: The Astro Charity Show will be back after a lapse of more than a decade to raise funds for Chinese education.

“A group of popular Astro stars and performers will be involved. Our target is to raise RM1.5mil this time,” organising chairman of the event Sie Chung Ann said.

The show will be held at Kingwood Hotel Ballroom here on Oct 4.

Sie said the five private Chinese secondary schools here — Guong Ming Middle School, Catholic High School, Wong Nai Siong Secondary School, Citizen Middle School and Kiang Hin Middle School needed about RM5mil in operating fund annually.

Together these schools have about 1,800 students and 122 teachers.

Sie disclosed that each year the schools were short of about RM3.6mil and the management board of each school had to fill the shortfall through various means.

“It is a big burden for the school board,” Sie said after meeting Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh yesterday to brief him on the problems and issues faced by the school board.

He also said some of the students in the five schools were enjoying reduced school fees or were given free education because they were from poor families.
