MALACCA-based sepak takraw club Bentara emerged champions in all three categories of the Ukhuwah Social Sepak Takraw Champion-ships held at the Universiti Malaya gymnasium recently.
In the inter-regu open category, the Bentara A team of Mohd Razif Arifin, Mohd Azuan Saadon, Mohd Husni Abd Kader and Mohd Saiful-rudin Khalid beat Masyarakat Bola Rotan in straight sets 15-11, 15-13 during the two-day competition.
In the inter-team category consisting of two regu in each team, both Bentara regu had to take their games to three sets against Bukit Putra B before clinching the title.
Tournament rules state that the players in both categories must be new talent or amateurs who have not represented their state or country.
Bentara team manager Zulkarnain Hassan said the club was based in Durian Tunggal and had a pool of more than 300 players.
“We regularly send teams to competitions around Malaysia and also neighbouring countries such as Indo-nesia and Singapore.
“Some of our players are in the national team and we also have many former national players. When the tournament requires amateurs, we just assemble teams from our pool of players,” he said.
Zulkarnain added that the club was self-funded and did not have any sponsors.
“The players are very dedicated and passionate about the sport. We do not get many competitions in Malacca but there is a sepak takraw league,” he said.
The tournament also featured the inter-regu invitational category consisting of teams with former national players, artistes and ustaz.
The Bentara team of Ahmad Zaini Mt Isa, Ithnain Md Jais, Mohd Rafi Md Esa and Saiful Ramli beat Warisan AZ to win the final game.
