JOHOR BARU: The Southern University College (Southern UC) is organising a Chinese national heritage musical performance to raise funds for its building.
The two-night event known as “The Legend of the Singing Fairy – Liu Shang Jie” tells the story of the lives of women living in a village on the mountains near the Quang Xi province in China.
The event publicity director Eric Ku Liang Tong said the story would be narrated through songs with 40 performers singing and dancing throughout the two-hour performance.
“Over five generations have been conducting the cultural performance to commemorate the struggles of women, who were controlled and bullied by men in the 17th century,” he said.
Ku said based on a true story, the performance would showcase on how a lady in the village relentlessly fought for women rights and for women to be seen at par with men.
“This is the Chinese version of Sound of Music with the traditional Chinese storyline,” he said adding that digital effects would be included to bring audience back into the yonder.
Ku hoped the event would raise few thousands ringgit for the university college’s building which is estimated to cost about RM15mil.
The two shows will be held tomorrow and on Thursday. Tickets are selling between RM30 and RM150, depending on seats.
