The Malaysian Singapore Sikh Sports Council (MSSSC) recently organised the 62nd Sikh Festival of Sports, also known as the Gurdwara Cup.

The festival was opened by the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The MSSSC was formed in July 1949 by a group of enthusiastic sports-minded Sikhs to further enhance sporting activities among the community in Malaysia.

MSSSC has since been the main regulatory body for all sporting activities of Sikhs in Malaysia and Singapore.

It was a proud year for Perak Sikh Union president Gurjeet Singh Rhande, as they won both the hockey and football senior titles.

In the senior hockey finals, Perak beat fancied Kuala Lumpur 4-3 after extra-time in a nail-biting match. Third place went to Selangor.

The Perak senior football team also created history by winning the tournament for three consecutive years after beating Singapore on penalties in an entertaining match.

Negri Sembilan, under the guidance of Satwant Singh and former state goalkeeper Teja Singh, came in a commendable third.

Perak also emerged champions in the junior football category after beating Kuala Lumpur in the final.

“Our teams worked very hard and put in a lot of effort to win the finals.

“We conducted training and skill enhancement sessions as well as motivational programmes to make sure the team was well prepared. Most importantly, the players were very dedicated and hardworking.

“The teams also demonstrated good discipline and sportsmanship. Perak Sikh Union will implement more programmes for the betterment of the teams,” said Gurjeet.

In the hockey junior category, Kuala Lumpur came out tops with Selangor and Perak finishing second and third, respectively.

The only women’s sport played was netball, with favourites Kuala Lumpur defeating Selangor to emerge champions. Malacca came in third.

The Negri Sembilan badminton team led by manager Jasbendar Singh did the state proud after they emerged champions in a round-robin format.

The Negri boys defeated defending champions Pahang to take home the title for the first time.

The 2014 Gurdwara Cup will be held in Penang.
