IN MALAYSIA, 916 gold, is usually purchased for investment purposes rather than as jewellery. However, Habib hopes to change this perception with its latest exclusive range.

The company commissioned an Italian manufacturer to design and develop 916 gold jewellery for its Oro Italia 916 collection, resulting in a collection that combines Italian design with good craftsmanship.

The collection was officially launched recently in conjunction with an exhibition organised by Habib at the Suria KLCC centre court until March 5.

Habib managing director Datuk Meer Habib said 916 gold was rarely found in European jewellery designs but it was popular with Malaysians not only for its shine and lustre, but also for its value as a viable asset for investment.

“Despite the current volatility, we expect gold prices to strengthen even further in the medium to long term as a result of demand and global economic factors,” he said, adding that “Oro” was the Italian word for “gold”.

He said the Oro Italia 916 collection was timely as gold enthusiasts in Malaysia now had the opportunity to invest in the trendiest and most fashionable pieces with the knowledge that it will likely appreciate in value.

“This collection is certainly a good investment because we are catering to customers of different backgrounds. Moreover, the price of gold has gone down so it is the right time to buy. Two weeks ago, it was US$1,650 (RM5,131) per ounce and now, it is US$1,560 (RM4,851). The gold value has appreciated 7% this year,” he said.

Meer spearheaded the launch of the collection alongside local celebrities such as Soo Wincci, Thanuja Anan-than, Emelda, Dynaz Mokhtar and Izara Aishah.

Adding further glitter to the event was Habib’s solid gold replica of the iconic national landmark, the Petronas Twin Towers. The replica will be on display throughout the jewellery extravaganza.

“When we first unveiled our solid gold Petronas Twin Towers replica, which is 1/1000th the size of the original and uses 6kg of gold, in 2001, it was valued at around RM1mil.

“With the price of gold today, its current value has jumped to about RM2.5mil. This is a clear reflection of the appreciative value of gold,” Meer said.

Meer added that the Oro Italia 916 collection carried exquisite bangles and bracelets as well as necklaces.

“We sell based on weight and the high price is because of the good workmanship, such as the clasps and springs, in the jewellery.”

In addition to the new Oro Italia 916 collection, Habib is also featuring its largest showcase of certified diamonds from all over the world at the exhibition.

Also on display is a wide variety of Habib’s latest diamond, gold and precious gemstone collections, which come with special discounts.

Customers at the exhibition can enjoy a reduction of RM8 to RM20 per gramme for 916 and 999 gold; up to 70% off on selected diamonds and gemstone jewellery and 80% off for Habib’s export collection. Furthermore, the first 50 customers to the exhibition each day can buy a pearl necklace at only RM38. This is limited to one necklace per customer.
