KEDAH will play host to two of the 24 sports events organised by the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) this year.
The two events are handball and sepak takraw.
Handball for the Under-12 and Under-18 age groups for both boys and girls will be held at the Sultan Abdul Halim sports complex in Jalan Suka Menanti, Alor Setar, from June 2 to 7, while sepak takraw for boys Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 age groups will be conducted at the Modenas sports complex in Gurun, Kedah, from June 3 to 7.
Last year, Kedah hosted the cross country race and badminton.
The 24 sports events in the MSSM calendar have been crammed into two school vacation periods, i.e. a nine-day break in March (March 22-30) and the mid-year break lasting 16 days between May 24 and June 8.
Johor, tasked to host soccer, ten-pin bowling and softball, will be the only state hosting three games while Kedah, Perak, Terengganu, Kelantan, Penang and Selangor will organise two events each.
Apart from the annual competitions, players involved in games like soccer, netball, rugby and sepak takraw will also compete in several national level competitions from August to November.
The MSSM sports calendar and host states are as follows:
Mar 23: X-country in Kelantan; Mar 25-28: golf in Sabah, gymrama in Kuala Lumpur; Mar 25-29: archery in Kuala Lumpur, chess in Perak, squash in Malacca, aquatic in Selangor, table tennis in Kelantan, tennis in Sarawak; Mar 25-30: cricket in Penang, rugby in Perak; May 19-23: athletics in Pahang; June 2-7: handball in Kedah, volleyball and sailing in Terengganu; June 3-7: sepak takraw in Kedah; June 4-7: netball in Perlis; June 3-8: soccer in Johor, basketball in Penang and hockey in Malacca; June 4-8: tenpin bowling and softball in Johor, gymnastics in Selangor, badminton in Labuan.
The FAM-Minister of Education Cup soccer competition for Under-14 and Under-16 players will be on between July and September.
The five-leg grand prix competition for Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 sepak takraw players and Under-16 netball players will be held in Malacca (April), Selangor (June), Negri Sembilan (August), Putrajaya (October) and Kuala Lumpur (November).
The premier schools sports carnival is slated to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 2-6 while the Orang Asli schools sports carnival will be in Selangor from Oct 28-31.
The MSSM-Milo Under-15 10-a-side competition will be held from Oct 18-20 in Perlis, the Cobra 10-a-side rugby competition for Under-16 players will be in November in Perak, and the Sport-Excel sepak takraw competition for Under-11, Under-14 and Under-16 categories will be held towards the end of November in Kedah.
The Under-17 100Plus soccer competition will be from Sept 15-20 in Kuala Lumpur and the Sixth Formers sports carnival will be hosted by Pahang from Sept 3-6.
