KUCHING: Rela should not be politicised, said Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian.

“It is totally wrong to ask Rela members to vote for Barisan Nasional (BN). It is immoral and politically wrong for them to do that. Don’t use a body that is funded by the rakyat to strengthen political support,” Baru told reporters during a press conference at his Christmas Day open house here.

The Ba’Kelalan assemblyman was asked to comment on Rela officer Lieutenant Colonel (Rela) Moses Sipan, who recently told Rela members to give “undivided support to BN in the coming election”.

Sipan was also quoted to have said during a function in Julau that since Budget 2013 contained some RM400mil for Rela, members should “show our appreciation” to BN.

Baru said Rela members should vote according to their conscience. “Be brave. Vote on your conscience. Follow your heart. It is really, really wrong for someone to tell Rela members how they should vote. Don’t manipulate Rela members like that.”

Baru said Rela was for the people and, “not a political party”.
