Worksyop Elite maintain their unbeaten record with late winner

Keen tussle: Worksyop Elite’s Jwan Kurniawan Margono (left) faces SIA’s K. Ragaram during the final.

AZIZI Norudin’s late strike helped Worksyop Elite win the Division Two crown in the Selangor Hockey League.

Azizi scored Worksyop Elite’s winning goal in their 2-1 victory over Selangor Indian Association (SIA) in the final at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Hockey Stadium in Jalan Pantai, Kuala Lumpur recently.

Both teams adapted a cautious approach as it was drizzling throughout the match. There were several chances for both teams but the opening goal only came in the 30th minute. Hardworking R. Anandraj scored for Worksyop Elite from a penalty corner.

SIA, with several former internationals on their side, did not take long to equalise. It came three minutes later, also from a penalty corner, with P. Praba scoring.

After the breather, the match swung from one end to the other. Azizi scored in the 67th minute to help Worksyop Elite become the champions.

The win was certainly encouraging as Worksyop Elite maintained their unbeaten record in the Selangor Hockey League. Now they will be looking forward to do well in the knock-out competition.

Worksyop Elite captain Kamaruddin Misman said it was a tough game and the players gave their best.

“SIA gave us a good fight. Luck was on our side and we managed to score. In fact they had a penalty corner in the last minute of the game but failed to make it count. We will continue training for the next competition,’’ said Kamaruddin.

Starbrite-E-Matrix settled for third spot when they defeated Selangor Police 3-2. Mohd Harfizi Baharon scored a hat-trick while Sachvinder Singh scored a brace for the Selangor Police.

Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundram, who is also the competition chairman, gave away the prizes to the winning teams.

Sivasundram said they were committed towards organising more competitions.

“Under the leadership of Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, the SHA has been initiating several programmes. We had organised the President’s Cup. Next we have plans to organise an indoor hockey competition,’’ said Sivasundram.
