MALACCA: The Malacca Bar, the Malacca Hockey Association’s Razak Cup team, the Malacca Squash Rackets Association Boys Under 12 side and the Malacca Sikhs Cultural and Sports Club, all raised themselves up in sporting glory when participating in local, outstation and overseas competitions.
The state Under 12 squash outfit set winning matters rolling when capturing the Nicol David-Ong Beng Hee Challenge Trophy when beating Selangor 2-1 in the boys team final. The winning side comprised Wang Peng Soon, Adam Azan Aziz, Siow Yee Xian and Ong Jin Zher.
To top it all, Peng Soon toppled the favourite and top seed Mohd Hafiz Zafri from Kedah 11-9;11-13,11-6;11-5 to lift the Boys Elite singles title from a field of 32 participants. Other Malacca youngsters who gained respectable rankings were Ong Wee Chin and Jin Zher.
Jin Zher came in fourth in the Boys Development division singles bowing out to Negeri Sembilan’s Krisher Raj Chadran 13-15;8-11;10-12 in the third placing play-off. Wee Chin occupied third spot in the Girls Development division beating Sarawak’s Nicole Tiong 11-8;6-11;12-10;11-6.
In their annual games series, the Malacca Bar made it a second consecutive triumph on the trot beating the Malaysian Medical Asso-ciation (Malacca Branch) by seven points to five in the annual series held at the Malacca Club Sports Complex in Tanjong.
The Malacca Bar won 2-0 at snooker and gained walkovers at table tennis and netball while badminton was stalemated at 3-3. On the other hand, the local Medical Association won 2-1 at both football and squash.
According to Malacca Bar sports division chairperson Karen Cheah, the victory over the medical side spells sweet as it come following two losses to the Malacca Courts Sports Club and the Selangor-Negeri Sembilan Combined Bar Team in annual sports series held earlier this year.
At hockey, the local state senior side staged a magnificient rally from two goals down to edge Selangor 5-4 to emerge as Division Two champions in the Malaysian Hockey Confederation annual tournament to gain promotion to Division One next year in the Razak Cup series which will again be hosted by Kuantan.
Toast for Malacca was Amirullah Zainol who bagged a hattrick (22nd,54th and 63rd minutes) while Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Desa helped himself to a brace (13th and 43rd). Mohd Noor Fareez Ibrahim (3rd and 60th),
Mohd Amerullah Abdul Aziz (11th) and Mohd Redza Maadun (30th) scored for Selangor.
In the 5th Vietnam Six a Side Hockey Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, the Malacca Sikhs Cultural and Sports Club (MSCSC) retained the Bowl title. In all 43 teams from Malaysia, Australia, United Arab Emirates,
France, Indonesia, Singapore and hosts Vietnam took part in the two-day event held at the District 8 two-artificial pitch Stadium.
The MSCSC which emerged as Cup runner-up in 2009 and Bowl winners last year held on to their mantle for another year beating Jakarta’s Trisakti University 1-0 through a Gurmit Singh winner. Club Emirates from UAE edged Jakarta Hockey Club 1-0 to bag the Cup division honours while Team 20/30 of Kuala Lumpur beat Trisakti Hockey Club of Jakarta 1-0 to capture the Plate title.
