THE beating of drums, roaring trumpets, soothing vocal melodies and a psyched-up dance celebrated the launch of the annual 1Malaysia Year End Sale (1MYES) by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and more than 150 invited international guests.

The impressive turn-out at Pyramid Ice was also part of the contest prior to the launch, as shoppers stood a chance to win one of five units of the latest mobile devices when they shopped on Nov 9 and 10.

The five winners were chosen during the 1MYES Launch. Among them were Freddy Tai Boon Fai from Kuala Lumpur and Fong Ah Choy from Subang Jaya, who each won Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

“I have always wanted a smart phone for myself, after seeing my wife have one for some time. I was really lucky, as I only spent RM47 to enter the draw,” Fong said.

In conjunction with the Divine Diwali celebration in the mall, Dr Ng also lit up oil lamps at the water feature on the ground floor.

During the launch, Shila Amzah took to the stage, entertaining guests with her melodious voice, belting out her hit Patah Seribu as well as Set Fire to the Rain and Forever Love.

“Shopping has always been regarded as an important and lucrative sector of our tourism industry, holding the second biggest share of tourist expenditure,” Dr Ng said.

“With all the initiatives by the industry’s key players, shopping malls and the Government, we will be able to elevate our status as a world-class shopping destination to rival some of the world’s best,” she added.

The launch of 1MYES also marked the introduction of Sunway Pyramid’s Mobile App. The mall has recently launched a revamped mobile application that will provide convenience and ease for shoppers when they are at the mall. Sunway Pyramid is the first shopping mall whose mobile app also features the car park locator.

“Being ranked as the second best Asia-Pacific shopping destination by the Globe Shopper Index is a proud achievement,” said Malaysia Shopping Malls Association and Council of Asian Shopping Centres president HC Chan.

“That same report also took note of retail tourism as an explicit part of the country’s development plan and sees more opportunity for development with the attention being paid to shopping tourism, and with Visit Malaysia Year 2013 around the corner, this presents a golden opportunity for industry players,” he added.

From Nov 10 until Jan 1, 2013, shoppers have the chance to grab great discounts and special offers put together by Sunway Pyramid.

The mall’s 800 outlets spread out over four distinctive precincts — Fashion Central, Oasis Boulevard, Marrakesh and Asian Avenue — are set to provide shoppers with an unforgettable experience.

In conjunction with 1MYES, Sunway Pyramid is also offering shoppers a chance to win a 2D/1N stay at the Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat worth RM3,248.

The offer is exclusive to Citibank credit cardmembers who spend a minimum of RM100 in a single receipt. Three winners will be selected weekly. Citibank cardholders will also get free parking with a minimum puschase of RM200.

The 1MYES launch ended with an energetic flash mob dance with Sunway Pyramid mascots Leo and Leona joining in on skates.
