A GROUP of Malaysian designers participated in the I Love Malaysian Designers Showcase and Charity Auction at The Venue, Kuala Lumpur recently.
The event attracted a full house and the auction raised RM2,000 for the Malaysian Red Crescent society (MRCS).
Mutiara Bahir, the organiser of the event, was full of praise for the cooperation given by the designers in making the event a success but admitted that the auction could have catered to a wider audience.
“Perhaps we could have auctioned more items that would have appealed to different age groups and fashion taste.
“However, I am proud that our first attempt managed to garner such support and I am grateful to Justin Yap, Syahrir Nurdin, Rhea Benson, Sereni and Shentel, My Batik Collection as well as Wonder Wardrobe for participating in the event, ” added Mutiara, 26, the creative director of Brew & Skittles, a label for ready-to-wear batik.
Meanwhile, Tasha Shilla, the ambassador for I Love Malaysian Designers Charity Auction feels that more should be done to showcase the work of Malaysian designers. She said she was happy to have been selected as spokesman for the event as it was a platform to promote local designers.
“I have always favoured local designers so when I was asked to be the event ambassador, I did not hessitate to say yes.
“I have always believed in our own designers as they are incredibly imaginative and creative,” she added.
At the end of the auction, a mock cheque was presented to MRCS honorary secretary Datuk Noordin Abd Razak.
The programme for the evening was divided into three segments involving 10 items provided by the designers. The first item to be auctioned was a green chiffon dress courtesy of Wonder Wardrobe, followed by a batik pareo from My Batik Collection sold at RM280.
Brew & Skittles contributed two items for bidding: a cotton batik Lee dress which went for RM200 and a Natalia dress which fetched a price of RM220. The Justin Yap jaw-dropping creation sold for RM280.
The highlight of the evening was the auction of two pairs of Rhea Benson heels. A pair was sold at RM420 after a lengthy session of bidding and counter-bidding.
