There we go: Blind masseurs and masseuses getting registered at the Society of the Blind in Malaysia headquarters yesterday.

KUCHING: Blind masseurs and masseuses around the state are petitioning for recognition from the Skills Development Department.

The massage therapists, who are also members of the Society of the Blind Malaysia, Sarawak Branch hope to be issued the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) in recognition of their skills and talents.

“So far, only one masseur has received the SKM certificate out of the over 80 massage therapists here in Sarawak,” said Society of the Blind Malaysia, Sarawak branch chairman Emmenuel Maoh Janting.

They were gathered at the branch headquarters yesterday to form a working committee of massage therapists in order to hold a dialogue with the authorities regarding the certificate.

“The committee will also discuss several issues faced by our massage therapists, such as standardising the price of our services and creating a club for traditional massage therapists as well.

“We are also very concerned about the rising number of unethical massage parlours and therapists in town, who we view as unhealthy competition for us genuine traditional massage therapists,” he added.

Emmenuel also hoped that the respective authorities and councils would stop issuing licenses to these establishments, which are creating a bad impression of the genuine article.

“Our massage therapists are very experienced and undergo a lot of training to be able to provide our clients with soothing, relaxing and most importantly satisfying massages, Being blind, we do our best but ha-ving all this unhealthy competition is affecting our livelihoods.” he said.

The society is also reaching out to the public for contributions and donations, as they are dependent on the Government and the private sector for financial aid. Those who wish to contribute or to know more about the society can contact its treasurer Adzohari Jamil at 019-818 4477, or Emmenuel at 019-301 0188.
