THE top three fastest competition walkers in each category of Penang Starwalk 2012 will receive a free complimentary entrance ticket to The Owl Museum.
This is made possible by The Owl Museum Art & Craft Collection, which is sponsoring 1,000 tickets worth RM10,000 for the event, where participants also stand a chance to win the tickets in the event’s lucky draw.
Museum director Tony Ch’ng said the museum was established in March, and was very glad to be one of the sponsors for the event for the first time.
“Starwalk is a very famous race-walking event in Penang and we hope to be able to continue supporting the event in future.
“This year’s participation of 22,000 people is a huge turnout and we hope to expose the new Owl Museum to the participants, who include visitors from outside Penang,” he said after handing over the tickets to The Star advertising executive Leong Shir Mein at the Star Northern Hub in Bayan Lepas on Thursday.
Ch’ng added that the sponsorship of the tickets, which would expire on Dec 31, is also aimed at encouraging more people, particularly children, to get to know the attractions that Penang Hill, where the Owl Museum is located, has to offer.
“It would be a waste if our own locals have not visited one of the state’s most iconic landmarks when foreigners are flocking from all over the world to visit this lovely place (Penang Hill),” he said.
He added that the museum had more than 2,500 owl-themed art and craft collected from over 30 countries.
The event will be flagged off at Birch House, Penang Times Square, at 6.30am on Sept 17, a replacement public holiday for Malaysia Day that falls on Sunday.
The route for non-competition walkers is 6km while it is 10km for competition walkers.
This year’s non-competition route covers several new heritage and historical sites apart from the traditional landmarks such as Fort Cornwallis, St George’s Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Kapitan Keling Mosque and Sri Mahamariamman Temple.
The new sites include Sia Boey Market, Tan Kongsi, Chew/Lee Jetties, Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, Customs Building (formerly Malayan Railway Building), Logan Heritage, The Whiteaways Arcade, Pinang Peranakan Mansion and Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh.
The walk is jointly organised by The Star and Penang Amateur Athletics Association and endorsed by the state Education Department and Penang Municipal Council.
Participants who complete the route within a two-hour time limit will be eligible for a lucky draw which promises attractive prizes.
The main sponsors are YES and Genneva Malaysia (platinum), Medispec (gold) and Magnum, 100 Plus, Golden Screen Cinemas, Nikon, Pallas, Milo and BP Healthcare (silver) while the official venue provider is Penang Times Square and official transport provider is Rapid Penang.
