KUCHING: National diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg is not just good at sports, turns out, she’s pretty funny too.
In a one-hour Internet chat with her supporters yesterday, which was hosted by Yahoo! Malaysia, she took on potentially difficult questions like “Are you single” and ran with it.
“No and yes, hua hua hua,” Pandelela said, 30 minutes into the online chat, when questions about her personal life was asked. On Twitter, the moderator of the chat wrote that Pandelela was “blushing” when the question came up.
Then came a flood of questions like “Do you have any plans on your love life,” “What characteristics must your ideal partner have?”
To the first question, she answered, “Yes, everybody needs love,” and to the second, she said her ideal partner must also be K-Pop fan just like her and that the person “must be funny”.
The last question of the chat was “Will you marry me?” from “Wangdu”; immediately after the question was posted, the moderator wrote, “OMG!”.
Almost immediately, Pandelela replied: “YES IN the SIMS. be my neighbour!!” and that led to a chorus of LOLs (laugh out louds) and ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) comments on social networks. For those who are not aware, The Sims is a virtual lifestyle game. Players create a character in the game and interact with other players.
In her first public Internet chat since returning from the London Games, Pandelela revealed that her favourite band was Big Bang, a K-Pop group. She said she listened to the band every day, also before and after all competitions. She listed the Korean boy band’s “Alive” as one of her favourites.
She also said that her dream car was an Audi although she could not drive yet. On the “hottest” Olympian, she named Nick McCrory, the American diver, and said that she would “make fun” of her own face if her likeness was included in a video game.
And asked of her opinion about the Malaysian Facebook user who said he would cut off his genitals if Pandelela won, she replied: “He is very famous. hehe... Just be careful next time and think through your brain. hahaha!”
From the outset, it was clear the chat was spontaneous and that 19-year-old diver, the first female Malaysian Olympic medallist, had not been coached on answers. She was witty from the get-go.
On a question about her exact thoughts during her last dive during the Olympics, she said: “I just said to myself: 1, 2, 3 jump!” Ask for her advice on why a person kept landing feet first into the pool, she said, “because you have not learnt diving yet”.
She told her supporters that she was Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s biggest fan. On whether she would like to publish an autobiography like Chong Wei has, she said, not yet, because Chong Wei has had so much more life experience than she has.
She said she and Chong Wei had been invited to have tea with Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) when the royal couple visit later this year.
At the end of the chat, the moderator said on Twitter: “Pandelela is all smiles, giggling and laughing, while answering your questions. Comel sangat!”
