One would not have guessed that Yvonne Sim was once a tomboy who only got her first skirt when she was 16.
“I always hung out with the boys and played basketball. I didn’t really care about my appearance.
“I only pierced my ears at 18 and started to be really girly when I got out of school,” she said.
The 24-year-old joined Miss Malaysia Tourism in 2009 and winning the FHM Girl Next Door in 2010 has opened doors.
Although she has received offers after winning FHM, she still went ahead to complete her honours degree in Interior Design in the UK so she could cross it off from her bucket list.
She recently came back from the UK and was a little bummed to miss the recently concluded Olympics.
“I wanted to watch the volleyball matches live, I support Brazil, they are good and they are hot!”
The self-confessed geek loves anime; her favourite animations are Spirited Away and Summer Days with Coo.
“I like The Mentalist and my favourite series has got to be Games of Thrones (her favourite character is the tomboy Arya),” she said, adding that her favourite actors are Hugh Jackman, Robbert Downey Jr and Johnny Depp.
Some girls would go all out to avoid the sun, not Sim. She loves being tanned.
“I like going to the beach and I miss the sun here. I found out that Malaysian beaches are actually quite good compared to the stony beaches I have been to in the UK.
“I now know why all the Europeans go crazy for the sun in Malaysia,” she said.
Aside from the sun, the foodie at heart also misses Malaysian food.
“It is one of the best in the world, full of flavour.
“We can have supper here unlike in UK where restaurants close at 5pm (7pm during the summer),” she said, adding, “My favourite food is Roti Jala, Wantan Mee, and crabs. I heard there’s a Roti Jala with Durian Sauce and would love to try it.”
As for her fashion style, she prefers comfortable clothes.
“I have an obsession for certain items such as black dresses, even if I don’t need it, I will hunt for it. I like hoodies, too.
“I also noticed that I have many grey-coloured pieces in my wardrobe,” she said.
She cites Japan, Australia and Spain as the top three countries that she would love to visit.
She hopes to combine her love for food and travelling and be a travel programme host.
She has done modelling in Malaysia and the UK when she was studying there.
As she speaks Cantonese and Mandarin, she hopes to try out modelling in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
“I like modelling but I want to go in-depth, maybe try out hosting,” she said.
