MOST of his life, Leong Chee Ming, who suffers from a rare condition called the “port wine stain”, which causes the blood vessels on his face to swell, has been hiding from the public eye.
The 42-year-old, who is desperate for a new lease of life, had his prayers answered recently when Serdang MCA chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong offered to seek help for Leong’s treatment.
Leong’s mother Hee Thye Tai, 66, said her third child among six, only started walking at the age of eight and never went to school due to slow development.
“When he was 14, we saw signs of reddish-purplish discolouration on his skin but did not think much of it. Two years later, there was a growth on his face. We sought treatment and got the growth removed. However, the swelling continued.
“He rarely goes out because he is afraid of people staring at him, which also makes me sad,” she said at a press conference at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) organised by Liew.
Liew said the family were poor and could not seek follow-up treatment for Leong.
“We are looking at ways to help Leong improve his life, but first he needs to get immediate treatment. He is now getting treatment from HKL. However, the doctor says Leong has a rare condition and treatment has been long overdue. This has complicated his situation.
“He is psychologically affected by his condition and is suffering from depression too. We are also looking at ways to help him cope,” said Liew, urging anyone with information on ways to help Leong improve his life medically or psychologically to contact the Serdang MCA.
Serdang MCA Wanita chief Senator Chew Lee Giok said earlier they had helped Leong apply for an OKU card to be eligible for welfare aid.
“Although his swollen face is not painful, his right hand and foot are weak. He also can’t hear well from the left ear and see well from the left eye.
“We are also trying to find a job where Leong can work from home. Currently, his brothers are supporting him financially,” she said.
